Martin Clist worked at Charles Ede, the London gallery founded in 1971 that specialises in ancient art from Egypt, Greece, Rome and the Near East. He has spent more than three decades in the art world and previously managed the Whitechapel Gallery under Sir Nicholas Serota, the former Tate director. At Charles Ede he served as Director and was ranked Senior Statesperson 2025 in the Spear's 500 Art Advisers index.
On ancient art he has said: "Ancient art is where it all started. For the past 7,000 years or so it's been a variation on a theme." He stepped down as a Director of Charles Ede in 2025.
